Have you planned a trip to the big apple? Do you know in which New York Airport you will arrive and leave?
As we all know: traveling to another country is sometimes a challenge in terms of organization and transportation. Especially when it comes to getting to and from the airport. Fatigue, stress, and heavy suitcases are factors that deserve a small organization in advance.
New York City Has Three Airports: JFK, La Guardia, and Newark. In this article, I give you the main characteristics of New York airports but also, and above all, all the transfer options available to you to reach Manhattan.
Before getting to the heart of the matter, here is a map showing the location of the 3 New York airports and their possible connections to Manhattan.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy International: the vast New York airport
Located in the Queens district, New York John Fitzgerald Kennedy Airport (JFK) is 16 miles from central Manhattan. Over 49 million passengers pass through it each year, making it the 17th airport in the world!
The latter has no less than eight terminals and 20 km2 surface, including a 3.6 km2 central terminal! It houses, in particular, approximately 80 airlines, including Delta Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and American Airlines.
If you land or depart there, be aware that several options connect JFK Airport to Manhattan: train, bus, or taxi.
It’s up to you to choose according to your desires and your budget. As a reminder, and to help you locate yourself a little better, here is a map showing the three airports in New York City and their different links with the city center.
Finally, if you are traveling in a group, consider the shuttle to avoid having to provide several taxis! Go Airlink Shuttles allow you to reach Manhattan for only $ 19 per person from any New York airport. You can take up to two pieces of luggage with you.
AirTrain JFK, the most economical option
Since 2003, the AirTrain is a train connecting the airport to the city’s metro and bus network and costing only $ 5. Also, it provides a free connection between the different terminals.
So this is an option economical and practical since it will save you from potential traffic jams if you travel during peak hours.
Also, having already taken it, I can assure you that it is clean and pleasant.
The taxi for a comfortable journey.
If your suitcases are heavy because of New York shopping, or if you prefer a comfortable journey, opt for a taxi.
If you arrive at JFK, you can find many taxis outside the airport. And then, if you’re in Manhattan and want to go to the airport, raise your hand to hail one!
Finally, note that the race will cost you around $ 50, which you will have to add a 15 to 20% tip and the price of tolls. Avoid it if your budget is limited!
La Guardia Airport: New York’s small airport
The smaller New York La Guardia Airport (LGA) is also located in Queens, with only four terminals.
It mainly serves national flights and a few for Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Bahamas. You will find therein particular the airline’s US Airways and American Airlines.
As with JFK Airport, you can also choose between taking a taxi or the NYC Airporter bus to get to La Guardia.
The Go Airlink NYC shuttle will connect to Grand Central Station, the Port Authority bus terminal, Penn Station, and Bryant Park. Guests can also take advantage of the free shuttle from Grand Central, and Bryant Park stops. The latter can take you between 23rd and 63rd Street.
City buses and the NYC Airporter
However, be aware that ‘There is no metro connecting the city to LaGuardia Airport. You can choose to take a bus (the M60 or Q70), which links the airport to certain metro lines. That said, I recommend that you opt for the Go Airlink NYC or a taxi if you are in a group. It will be more comfortable, mainly if you are not used to New York.
Taxi: An affordable option.
You can also take a taxi to and from LaGuardia Airport. Note that the race will be about $ 30, only to get to the center of Manhattan.
That said, it remains an affordable option and will assure you a pleasant journey. And who knows, your driver may have some fun New York anecdotes to tell you!
Finally, keep in mind that these options offer random journey times, depending on traffic. So plan and go ahead!
Newark International Airport
Finally, west of New York City and the Hudson River is Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). It is the oldest New York airport still in use.
You will find many international companies like Air France, China Airlines, Aer Lingus, and many others.
AirTrain and Amtrack trains
Newark Airport also hasAirTrain, making it possible to join the urban bus and metro networks for $ 5. It also offers connections between terminals, car parks, and car rental agencies. Rather practical and economical!
Then the train Amtrak is also an option, as it links the airport to Manhattan’s Penn Station.
Buses: NJ Transit and Newark Airport Express
If you prefer to take the bus, you have two main options for getting from the airport to Manhattan: the NJ Transit and the Newark Airport Express Bus.
The NJ Transit, just like Amtrak, will take you to Manhattan, at Penn Station, located on 34th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenue. The excellent plan: the journey is free for children under 11.
As for him, the Newark Airport Express Bus will cost you $ 28 for a return trip, or $ 16 for a one-way trip. The bus will take you to Bryant Park, Port Authority, and Grand Central train station. Please note: the Newark Airport Express Bus only stops at terminals A, B, and C.
Finally, for the options mentioned above, count Approximately one hour between Manhattan and Newark Airport.
Taxi: high prices
Regarding Newark Airport, the taxi is the option that I am not recommended. Indeed, you will not find any yellow taxi there since it is located in another state, New Jersey. The price will, therefore, be much higher!
You will understand, the taxi to or from Newark Airport is to forbid!
And UBER: is it an exciting solution to reach the city from the airport?
Created in 2009, UBER is a VTC service. In New York, UBER cars are very numerous, which is very practical. The price of the race depends on the kilometers traveled, and the type of vehicle ordered. To get an idea of the cost of the race, do not hesitate to make a simulation directly on the site.
Using UBER to reach your destination is very practical and advantageous :
- The service is simple to use: After downloading the application on your mobile, all you have to do is fill in the information relating to your race.
- Wait times are reasonable, and if the driver is late, he will notify you.
- Vehicles are clean, and bottled water is often offered to passengers.
